The Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) has committed a 2 million euro grant to support acoustofluidics research by a multidisciplinary consortium of VUB, KU Leuven and UHasselt, coordinated by the µFlow Cell. In this Strategic Basic Research (SBO) project ‘Scalable Bulk Acoustic Wave Solutions to Separate Micro- and Nanoparticles in Flow (AWESOME)’ will be developed by combining microfluidics and acoustics. The project will take four years and will be supported by an Advisory Committee of 10 companies and stakeholders in Flanders/Belgium from different industries. Some target applications are: separation of bioreactor streams, purification of pharmaceutical and fine chemical compounds, removal of microplastics from water.
